SmILE addresses the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in older adults, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and frailty fractures, which often lead to a permanent decline in health and autonomy. With the economic burden expected to increase by 65% from 2020 to 2040, early prevention is essential. SmILE will provide a cross-sectoral, early risk detection methodology through holistic analysis of health data. Co-creation with end-users ensures consideration of mental and physical abilities, socio-economic background, and living conditions. The project will offer AI-based patient analysis integrating smart wearables and sensor-equipped implants to monitor general health, disrupt frailty cycles, and reduce re-fractures. SmILE will: (1) develop an integrated platform to collect, manage, and analyse multimorbid geriatric data using AI; (2) establish a patient-centred, patient-controlled pan-European health data governance model; and (3) create a solution driven by older citizens’ needs. It aims to improve quality of life, support empowerment, and ease healthcare burdens.
