17 Feb ODIN: Celebrating Four Years of Innovation in European Healthcare
The Final Event of the ODIN project marked a major milestone, celebrating almost four years of research, collaboration, and deployment of cutting-edge technologies across European hospitals. The event provided a dynamic platform for attendees to explore groundbreaking health technology innovations, discover real-world implementations in smart hospitals, and engage with key leaders from the healthcare ecosystem.
The Final Event of the ODIN project was held on November 29th, 2024, at the Madrid Innovation Hub (Medtronic’s premises). The event brought together key players from across the healthcare ecosystem to reflect on the project’s impact and future. Attendees discovered cutting-edge technologies, learned from successful implementations in smart hospitals, and engaged in forward-thinking discussions about the digital transformation of healthcare. It was a day to celebrate the achievements of ODIN and to envision how its outcomes can shape the digital transformation of healthcare in Europe and beyond.
1. Welcoming Session: ODIN Project Introduction
The event began with institutional welcome remarks from Miguel López-Valverde, Madrid Regional Minister for Digital Transformation, Germán Gutiérrez, Director of Integrated Health Solutions at Medtronic Ibérica & ODIN Project Coordinator, and María Teresa Arredondo, Director of Life Supporting Technologies at UPM and member of the ODIN coordination team. It was a unique opportunity to reflect on the progress made and celebrate the collective effort that is shaping the future of healthcare across Europe.
These introductions were followed by a Project Overview, offering a comprehensive look at ODIN’s objectives, use cases, technological innovations, and ecosystem-driven approach by Sergio Guillén, CIO at Mysphera & ODIN Deputy Project Coordinator and Giuseppe Fico, Associate Professor and Health Area Manager at UPM & ODIN Technical Manager.

2. ODIN Innovations in Action
This central session brought ODIN’s solutions to life. Led by Alejandro Medrano, ODIN Platform Manager at UPM, it featured video demonstrations and presentations from pilot sites across Europe, showcasing how ODIN technologies addressed five critical healthcare challenges:
Challenge 01: Logistics – Locating and transporting resources efficiently
Challenge 02: Patient Care – Monitoring and end-to-end tracking of clinical processes
Challenge 03: Support for Diagnosis – Leveraging AI to assist clinical decisions
Challenge 04: Support for Treatment – Enhancing treatment through intelligent systems
Challenge 05: Disaster Preparedness – Strengthening hospital resilience
During this session, attendees had the opportunity to explore how the ODIN project addressed real-world healthcare challenges through cutting-edge digital solutions. The spotlight was placed on practical use cases and technological innovations that are already transforming hospital operations and patient care. Mr. Alejandro Medrano, Senior Researcher at Life Supporting Technologies (UPM) and ODIN Platform Manager, led the session by presenting the ODIN platform and its integration into various pilot sites across Europe. A series of use cases were showcased, highlighting how participating entities implemented and adapted ODIN solutions to meet their specific needs—from improved workflows and AI-supported decision-making to robotics and smart data systems. This hands-on demonstration of ODIN’s results illustrated the project’s potential to drive sustainable innovation in the healthcare sector.
The session concluded with a roundtable involving key implementation and technical leaders:
- Leandro Pecchia, ODIN Pilot Manager
- Daphni Plati, ODIN AI Team, FORTH
- Pilar Sala Soriano, Innovation Manager at Mysphera
- Gastone Ciuti, Robotics Manager, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna
